Academic Hall of Shame-original LA Times Article

Here is the title and date of the original Los Angeles Times article on the Calif. Decathlon's financial woes. . .

In order to get the full 330 word text you need to set up an account with the LA Times and would need to pay for the article. I bought a ten article allottment for about $15 or $16.

As far as I know there are only a couple of articles in the Times about this financial disaster. . .the gist of the story is that funding had dried up for CAD and director Marvin Cobb explained that they simply needed to cover their quarter-million a year budget, and they had to get that from private sources. . .

Suffice it to say, that without this widespread awareness of the CAD financial woes, (an awareness that the CAD board members seeking Marvin Cobb's ouster were very disturbed about. . .they HATED to hear that the newspapers had found out that they were out of funds. .), there would not have been a 2005 competition. Once the current director Marvin Cobb, explained the situation to the Times, and the information was published, additional donors came forward to help make sure there was a 2005 competition. . .Cobb was instrumental in making sure this years competition was held, ON TIME and in GOOD ORDER. . .and it was. The March 2005 competition was held at the LAX Marriott and the winner was El Camino Real High, from Woodland Hills, CA

That kind of success is not enough to prevent his being fired by the current CAD board. . . .

I'm even hearing accusations that this was being planned WHILE Cobb was succeeding in putting on this year's competition. . .

Yeesh! I still get the "willies" every time I think about it. . .
